CityDailyPhoto-Theme Day-Abandoned

The Creagh House was built in 1875 by Colonel Charles Howe Cuff Knox, one of the big landlords in the area.  In 1924 the Creagh estate became a TB sanatorium.  Reduced in size in the 1930s by fire, when part of it was demolished, there still remains today a sizeable period house of around 6000 square feet.  The Craigh House is in Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo.

I would have liked to see what the books were.  Books and a beer :)

This served as part of the sanatorium, maybe for the patients to be examined or quarantined.

Here is an old photo of what the Creagh House looked back in the day;  Photo courtesy of the Archiseek website.

  4. Wow -- looks like it was a beautiful structure back in its day. Looks like a portion of it may still be in use...with the fresh looking keg outside and books/folders inside. Sad to see all those broken windows. Nice contribution for theme day!

  6. A beautiful mansion at one time. I see a sailboat model in a window. abandoned for sure. Why?
We have a sanitarium in the next small town left in to a similar fate.

  7. So many chimneys! Glad I didn't have to build all those fires. :-)

  9. That just takes my breath away. My god, what a place! And what a mess it is today. I'd guess it would cost several fortunes to put it all back together. Actually, it looks very spooky. I'd stay clear if I were you. Probably lots of ghosts and germs... 😻

  11. Good choice for the theme day but it's sad to see such a grand place fall to such ruin. And it's very curious to see books through the window like that.

  12. Oh my. It must have been rather grand in the day. I wonder if they will restore it?

  13. Thank you so much for showing the way it was back in the day Bill, it's such a shame it's gone from rather grand to abandoned. Makes you wonder exactly how can that happen!

  16. Quite a difference between then and now. It seems desolate.

  17. These are scenes I've seen here and there in Ireland, calling out for a rehab.

  18. It certainly does have a rich history. Wonder why it has been allowed to deteriorate; probably lack of funds.
